—  OVERVIEW

The Commons at Sugar House is a retail/office development located in the historic Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City, comprising 86,000 square feet of retail, including a 25,000 square-foot Barnes & Noble and 15,000 square-foot Old Navy anchor stores. The site formerly housed several run-down detached buildings, large expanses of asphalt and the Hidden Hollow Natural Area. Hidden Hollow, once a trash-filled creek, was rescued by local elementary students and formed the basis for the site plan of the new development. Master Planning involved the input of many community organizations and resulted in the creek becoming the focal point of the site plan. The project consists of thirteen sepa-rate buildings, and several pond, bridges and walkways. The buildings are respectful of the scale of historic Sugar House and have become a central gathering space for people throughout the valley. Babcock Design was subsequently asked to design the retail infill pads in the adjacent urban fabric that now houses Paradise Bakery and Pei Wei Asian Diner.
