—  OVERVIEW

A NEW SCHOOL, BUILT AROUND THE OLD ONE.

Canyon Rim Academy, a K-6 charter school serving Salt Lake Valley’s East Bench, began in a former district elementary school. The building kept costs low, but it came with safety concerns and lacked what the school needed most: a functional performance space and a large gym. After studying several ways to reuse portions of the existing structure, Babcock Design and the school determined that an entirely new building would best serve its students. The new school was designed to rise around the old one, so classes could continue throughout construction, with the move and demolition taking place over the summer. Inside, a dedicated cafeteria doubles as classroom and play space, and a large gym with retractable seating and curtains converts into a technically advanced auditorium. A library and general and specialty classrooms complete the program. The building works with the site’s natural slope, connecting its upper level directly to the playing fields above, while its form draws on nearby Millcreek Canyon and Grandeur Peak, framed in full view from the main lobby.
