You have a vision - we give it form
To start this evolution we thoroughly investigate the factors that influence architectural design; the site, the program and the project goals of the client. Through a studio charrette, our design team assimilates those influences as formative parameters, reaching the primary concept that will inform decisions as the project develops – what will make this a dynamic and successful work of architecture?
Applying this primary concept, we draw on our experience, using design as a problem solving tool. We analyze spatial relationships, access and connectivity diagrammatically and in three dimensions. Our team then studies how various functions are expressed both internally and externally, exploring building form and finishes in the context of the surrounding environment. As the building takes form during the construction phase, we ensure that the client’s goals are met and a successful project is delivered to our client.
Pre-Design
Pre-Design is our opportunity to learn about the project — an information-gathering phase. What will make it a success? What are the client's overall objectives, and what are the subsidiary goals of the user groups? We start by interviewing the stakeholders, listening carefully to truly understand the essence of the design challenge. A list of priorities begins to emerge, and together we develop a plan to reach those goals.
At this point, our design team works to assimilate and integrate the information, honing in on a cohesive vision. We develop an architectural program - the requirements for the function and qualities of each space. We evaluate the program and the site constraints for potential opportunities and synergies. Simultaneously, we analyze potential risks and propose means to mitigate them. Prior to selecting a direction, the team puts all options out on the table for consideration, so they can be thoroughly explored.
When we meet again with the user groups, we review conceptual sketches and diagrams to flush out design options and client preferences.
Design
After our information gathering is complete, we establish a concept. The concept is a set of principles that will guide design and inform all decisions throughout the process. This concept is a direct result of investigations and interactions with the client.
The concept will be constant; the form that achieves the concept is fluid. Design is iterative - the options are infinite; our role is to provide solutions that meet budget, function and aesthetic intents. If the design doesn't meet all three, the process is incomplete.
To provide value to the process, we strive to deliver innovative solutions to design problems. As such, we will typically propose alternative, non-conventional solutions for review. We pro-actively problem-seek. We identify potential obstacles and determine strategies to overcome them. By communicating effectively, the design process and projected outcome are transparent.
Construction Documents
The design process flows into the development of construction documents. In this phase we transform concept and vision into documents that provide instruction to the contractor. Collaboration between our staff allows us to draw on our broad expertise, to build on lessons learned from past projects, and develop innovative strategies to technical construction challenges.
The quality and accuracy of our construction documents is paramount in the success of the project. We minimize errors and maximize detailing opportunities through peer reviews at appropriate stages through the process.
Completion
The construction documents are our deliverable, but the built form is our product. The drawings may be complete, but we are involved in the project as the owner's ally and advisor until the building is occupied. During construction we regularly review the progress to ensure continuity of the design intent. During this process, we consider the contractor as our teammate, providing supplemental information at their request, and using our shared knowledge base to execute a project that exceeds expectations.
