FLSmidth specializes in equipment and technologies for the processing of minerals around the world. Their North America headquarters is comprised of a 90,000 square-foot office building linked to a 70,000 square-foot technology center and is located in the center of the Salt Lake Valley at a nexus of vehicular, light rail transportation and the Jordan River Trail. A highly specialized program for the technology center accommodates areas for research and development of large-scale mining equipment. A courtyard with trellis, water-feature and outdoor grill connects the two buildings creating a comfortable outdoor setting for large company gatherings.
Phase 2 was an office expansion that provided four stories and 68,000 square feet of additional office space with a dramatic glass atrium and executive conference suite to seamlessly connect and unite phase 1 & 2 buildings. Glazing was utilized to keep the building light. The atrium was designed to unify the two buildings and be an extension of the outdoors. The building was fused together with floor to ceiling curtain wall glazing at the sides and the exterior finishes and materials were wrapped into the space at either end.
